Peter Bullock undertook postgraduate neurosurgical training in London and Oxford before working in Nottingham with Nobel laureate Peter Mansfield on some of the first dynamic MRI studies of the brain. He was appointed a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Kings, and then travelled to North America where he visited leading centres such as Toronto and Chicago, practising minimally invasive techniques in neurosurgery. Such techniques cause less discomfort for patients and help to reduce time in hospital.
He has performed over 4,000 neurosurgical operations and is an expert in both Gamma Knife® and CyberKnife®, as well as the Brainlab neuronavigation system. Rarely among UK neurosurgeons, he undertakes mainly intracranial work (inside the brain) as well as spinal operations such as intradural tumours, lumbar disc prolapse and lumbar canal stenosis.
Peter Bullock has published papers on a range of specialist subjects in peer-reviewed journals, including Brain, the Journal of Neuro-oncology, the Journal of Neurology the Journal of Neurosurgery, the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, British Journal of Neurosurgery, Oncology Reports Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. He contributed to the large study on clipping and coiling aneurysms published in The Lancet in 2004 and published a textbook and contributed chapters to leading surgical textbooks, including Chapter 16 of The Skull and Brain (New Aird’s Companion in Surgical Studies, Third Edition, 2005).
He is Consultant Neurosurgeon to King’s College Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital Trust, and Honorary Consultant to Maudsley Hospital and Bethlem Royal Hospital. He has a major interest in teaching and training and served on the South East Thames Neurosurgical Training Committee for many years. He is a member of the Society of British Neurosurgeons and an international member of the Congress of Neurosurgery USA.
He is a frequent invited lecturer and speaker at conferences worldwide and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians.
